Mt Morgan and Mt Percival
Posted by pdittman on October 24th, 2020 in 52 With a View, Hiking/Trekking

When they say 52 with a view, sometimes there’s no view. It was mid-October, year of the COVID, we thought we’d add a few more peaks to our 52WAV list. The day was supposed to gradually clear – it didn’t. On the way northward, the skies were overcast, though no rain in sight.

We were at the Mt. Morgan trailhead shortly before 9am. The two lots on either side of Rt113 just outside Holderness and near Swann Lake were already near capacity. Fortunately, we found a spot, geared up and headed out.

The trail itself was well maintained. And it became pretty we were in a low-lying cloud (fog). Not too bad, but it made everything damp – dripping trees, wet leaves and some wetness on our clothing. The trail gradually, though steadily gained elevation, with lots of exposed roots and every so often some small scrambles over some boulders.

Shortly after an hour, we came to the ladders on the trail which were placed to enable scaling a boulder face, just shy of Mt Morgan. There was another way around to get to Mt. Morgan. With footing and weather conditions, we decided on the other way around. Nothing to see, no views, except some grayness.

We retraced our steps and made our way over to Mt Percival. While it was a ridge walk – with not much elevation change, the footing was ore of the same – wet leaves, rocks, and a few boulders. 25 minutes later, we were at Mt. Percival – same conditions, grayness.

With not much to see, we had a quick bite to eat (clif bars), and headed back, retracing our steps. Weather conditions hasn’t changed any, eve at the slightly lower elevation – wet leaves and dropping trees.

We were back at the car, with a full round trip time of about 3:20 and a distance about 6.8mi.
