{"id":2402,"date":"2019-12-02T17:23:24","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T22:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/?p=2402"},"modified":"2025-08-07T08:35:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T12:35:16","slug":"routeburn-track","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/routeburn-track\/","title":{"rendered":"Routeburn Track"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With soaring mountain peaks, huge valleys, waterfalls and jewel-like lakes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/fiordland\/places\/fiordland-national-park\/things-to-do\/tracks\/routeburn-track\/\">Routeburn Track<\/a> is another of New Zealand&#8217;s Great Walks. It follows a point-to-point path from the Routeburn shelter on Glenorchy (Lake Wakatipu) to the Divide on the road to Milford Sound, linking the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/ca\/feature\/national-parks-mount-aspiring\/\">Mount Aspiring National Park<\/a>&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newzealand.com\/ca\/utilities\/search\/\">Fiordland National Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan was to begin at the Routeburn Shelter trailhead, north of Glenorchy, make our way to the Routeburn Falls hut, and return on the same path \u2013 roughly a 12 mile round trip. We headed out early, expecting a full day and, while the drive northward toward Glenorchy along Lake Whakatipu was beautiful, we also saw some threatening skies.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-768x577.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-1536x1154.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/peterdittman.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_2154-edited-2048x1538.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Undaunted, we continued to the trailhead and unpacked our rain gear \u2013 always easier to put it on in dry weather!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early on, we had a stream\/river crossing. This was really our first experience with one on the island \u2013 and what a treat! We were beginning to get a sense of trekking in New Zealand . This track was a wildly different experience than on the preceding days. The hut itself was very reminiscent of the Appalachian Mountain Club huts we\u2019re familiar with in New Hampshire\u2019s White Mountains. As always, even on the same trail, the views\/perspectives are very different.
