For our week-long peak-bagging adventure, we were based in a cute AirBnB in Carrabassett Valley. In addition to one of the big New England ski destinations – Sugarloaf – it was surrounded by a number of the New England highest hundred summits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this day, we were headed to East Kennebago Mountain – number 91 on the list. Like Elephant Mountain<\/a>, East Kennebago is pretty much off the beaten path, with dirt road access and virtually nothing around.<\/p>\n\n\n

The trail itself included a bit of bushwhacking, which probably accounts for the sparse information available about the hike. And while we’ve done a bit of bushing, you never quite know what you’re going to get – sometimes easy, sometimes not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turns out, this one was more herd path than bushwhack, generally decent all around. A good portion of the trail followed what looked like an old logging or access road of some kind. Not showing recent tracks but certainly something which caused the path to remain clear.<\/p>\n\n\n

And someone was even kind enough to add a little makeshift signage to the trail to clearly mark where the bushwhacking began.<\/p>\n\n\n

While no “whacking” was really needed, we were definitely following a herd path to the summit itself.<\/p>\n\n\n
