Seemingly not a straight road in the country! And providing endless trekking opportunities.

Our first trail choice was relatively near our accommodations and somewhat modest in its stats – about 5.5 miles with about 1,500 ft of elevation change. We chose this hike partly to give us some time to adjust to the elevation – the trailhead was at 7,500 ft.

The other enticement was this hike visited a Refugio. Having had so many good experiences with European Refugio’s, we wanted to see how this compared.

Alltrails.com labeled this hike as “hard” though by the numbers, though it seemed on the threshold of impacting our experiences and stamina, so we went.

Every hike is different, factors of terrain, views, and footing vary wildly. And yes, even getting to the trailhead. In this case, the drive to the trailhead while on a paved road felt as if we were driving on someone’s driveway. A single-wide road, with sheds and even some farm equipment. Really caused us to wonder if we weren’t encroaching on private property.

Shortly, we arrived at the parking area to a beautiful and tranquil surroundings.

Gearing up, we set out. At first, it seemed as if we were in someone’s backyard – perhaps so, considering the house near the trailhead gave the vibe of a valley ski chalet undergoing a bit of construction in the off season.

Soon enough, we entered a wooded/forested area following what looked like a dirt track/roadway made only for ATVs or high-clearance 4bys. Footing was good, easy to follow.

Gradually gaining elevation, the path became more rocky as we began to emerge beyond the treeline. Very much the type of terrain we’re accustomed to. As you can see, it was a stunningly clear day, perfect for the hike.

Making our way further, we emerged at the Refugio – a small-ish facility, set in a bowl of sorts, next to Estany de Juclar – the lake itself.

Refugio Juclar

Estany de Juclar

The Estany (lake) showed signs of drought – a lowered water level exposing a bleached rocky shoreline.

The refugio seemed almost vacant – no one outside, and only after a few minutes did we find the caretaker.
