For our second day of Andorra hiking, we were again blessed with stunning weather! Cloudless skies and cool temperatures – perfect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our choice for the day headed southward from the Grau Roig ski and outdoor adventure center. Interestingly, while often a jumping off point for hikes, when not snow covered, ski areas often have a tired, worn-out look to them without all the white stuff and throngs of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one was no different. Empty parking lots, a few maintenance workers doing their projects, giving off that emptiness vibe and almost making it hard to imagine the seasonal transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n

Quickly leaving the parking lot behind and already above treeline, the trail continually gained elevation with little protection from the bright sunshine. <\/p>\n\n\n

This was one of those hikes where looking backward was just as stunning as what was ahead. All around, visibility was exceptional and the scenery breathtaking. Easy to find an excuse to stop, maybe a sip of water, and marvel at the beautiful views!<\/p>\n\n\n

As we gained elevation, we eventually came to the Col de Montmalus, offering views further southward toward Estany Montmalus. Andorra being the tiny country it is, at this point we were less than 1\/2 mile from both the Spanish and French borders! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point on the Col, we were also near 9,000ft elevation, and definitely beginning to feel the elevation – not so much with any sort of sickness, more with the thinner air – and getting more winded with the exertion. <\/p>\n\n\n

After taking stock to gauge our condition and stamina, we decided to forego summiting Montmalus and head down. Though still making frequent stops to just enjoy the trail and outdoors!<\/p>\n\n\n

AND, to enjoy a bit of refreshment at the Refugi del Llac de Pessons<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n
