Something we have never done on a multi-day trek – take a zero day. A day where we do no hiking (at least, not on the route itself), chalking up zero miles for the day. Instead, just taking a day to recover, relax, and enjoy the journey.
This was intentional – we were at our maximum elevation, just above 9,000′. Seemed reasonable to take a day off and enjoy the space – where we were and what was around us. It worked out perfectly! Especially since we also knew ahead of time that the Rifugio had a sauna – yes, a sauna at 9,000′. Remember, this is a favorite ski destination, so it makes some kinda sense.

One of the things that was a draw for Refugio Lagazoui was they had a sauna. So, of course, we included a bit of pampering! Seemed a bit odd to be walking to the sauna, outside in a towel when it was in the 40’s, but it was really nice to enjoy the experience.

As it happens, this region was the front lines during World War I, between Italy and Austria. Fittingly, there was a small museum and memorial to the brave souls involved in the conflict.
