While planning the Alta Via 1 trek, it was tempting to do as much distance as possible – every night a different Rifugio – as if driven by the goal of getting to the end. Yet, we’re often reminded it’s not the goal, it’s the journey and so, with that in mind, we planned a zero day in the Dolomites – spending 2 nights at Rifugio Lagazuoi.
Having a zero day meant we could sleep in a bit (hah!), enjoy the day, explore the surroundings. And there was much to explore. After our first evening meal, it was off to bed – unfortunately, no clear skies, indeed a thunderstorm – at 9,000′.
The following morning broke with relatively clear skies – at least no enshrouding fog. We took the opportunity to explore the area.
At this elevation, we were in and out of the clouds most of the day. For a bit, the skies cleared
but then, just as quickly, the clouds settled bring us back into the fog.
In/Out – make up your mind!
but then, what else would someone do on a cloudy day – have a sauna – at 9,000!
That was the day – quiet, relaxing, not a whole lot to do when the nearest civilization is miles away!
Even so, not bad for a zero day!
